A Long Overdue Update

Hi Reader

I haven't sent an email in a long time so wanted to share an update on where I've been and what I'm working on these days.

The reason for the radio silence is twofold:

1. My day job went crazy

I was promoted and we've been spinning up new divisions and service lines non-stop.

This takes A LOT of time and doing a good job has been my top priority.

2. My wife's job went crazy

My wife is a florist and has been scaling her business.

She now has three locations, and I'm helping however I can.

Executive by day, flower delivery man by night...

But I'm Still Writing

The main focus has been my regular articles for Maritime Executive magazine, which come out every two months.

But now my schedule has freed up a little bit. The kids went back to school and my daughter started high school, which puts both kids back on the same schedule. This frees my morning back up to work on some side projects.

This Is What I'm Working On Now

The first thing I did was rebuild my website.

I added a bibliography of published work, plus a section for all speaking engagements, podcasts, etc. that I've been on. I didn't have a historical record of everything in one place before so wanted to clean that up.

The other big change there is that the Writing section now captures all of the different online projects I've done. Previously it was just for the business & productivity newsletter The Lever (which is what you subscribed to). I am still hosting that, but have also created space for other, totally unrelated projects.

Common practice online is to Focus on one thing. And that is good advice. But we are multidimensional, and the projects on other platforms (Substack, Medium, etc.) are not fully controlled by me meaning they could be deleted at any time. So I've retooled to keep a record of everything in one place.

Individual projects will still be hosted on third-party platforms, but everything will be duplicated on my site.

The second thing is that I started a new newsletter on Substack

It is called Everything I Don't Know About Fishing, and documents my family's foray into tournament fishing!

My son has been hooked on fishing for the last year and so we decided, as a family, to go all in. We joined the team, are buying a boat, and commiting to the travel and tournament schedule that the (super-competitive!) Texas tour circuit demands.

The first thing that I found out is that there is a LOT that I don't know about fishing. We are trying to close this knowledge gap quickly, and the best way I know to do that is to:

  1. Do the thing
  2. Write about it

This is obviously much different than things I've written before, and I'm enjoying it immensely.

It's a lot of fun and I encourage you to follow along.

A Question For You

You did not sign up for a fishing newsletter.

I use (and pay for) Kit to distribute emails to my subscribers. My question to you is:

I can segment the lists by interest, so can do either fairly easily. But I don't want to presume that my fishing adventures are something you are as interested in as I am.

Thanks for reading!

Sean
