Create operational excellence & reliability using the principles of human and organizational performance | People - Process - Time - Technology
I'm a writer, speaker, full time executive, part-time help at my wife's flower store, and ship Captain.
My specialty is in business operations - first in my career at sea, now in business as an executive and consultant.
I build systems that reliably produce results. And I work hard to create cultures that people are proud to be a part of.
In other words leadership, problem solving, and managing complex systems in an uncertain environment.
There is one big underlying principle that guides my approach:
Leverage
Accelerated success requires the smart use of people, process, time, and technology to produce maximum outcomes from achievable inputs.
Join me as I show you how to apply these levers to your own life and business.
Being smart about how you do the work and where you apply the effort is the difference between getting what you want and never quite hitting the mark.
The Lever is primarily longform writing, as that is how I think and is what I enjoy creating.
⏰ There is no set schedule.
I create a lot of content in my career and have a full freelance writing calendar.
What I write here is personal. It's for your enrichment and my enjoyment.
Prioritization is a core time management skill and the reality is that with my limited personal writing time, paying client work needs to come first. When I'm mid-project my publishing schedule here will slip.
So instead of adding the additional stress of an arbitrary schedule I just let it flow naturally.
That said, my loose target is two or three articles each month, plus a few shorter emails.

My writing is about being effective in business, at any level. It's for:
➡️ Business leaders creating effective workplace cultures
➡️ Managers working to build safe, reliable, and efficient operations
➡️ Individual contributors trying to be effective and get ahead in your careers
If the phrase 'operational excellence' means something to you, then you'll find something here to help.
I don't have a magic bullet. It still takes work and requires effort.
Its how and where you apply that effort that creates leverage.
But if you need some help climbing up to the next level then the ideas here are for you.
This isn’t corporate fluff or theoretical advice. It’s the distilled essence of what works — pulled from:
🔶 15 years in offshore operations as a ship’s Captain
🔶 A career in marine consulting, survey, and expert witness work
🔶 My current role as a senior executive in the global energy industry
🔶 Research and conversations with top performers across sectors
I’ve lived this principle. Now, I share what I’ve learned about finding small levers that create big, repeatable outcomes.
